Meter Reading

Once electricity reaches your home, your consumption is measured through your electrical meter.

In order to determine your monthly power consumption, your meter is read by Saint John Energy's meter readers on a monthly basis.

Saint John Energy currently utilizes five full-time meter readers to read the entire City of Saint John. This can be accomplished in an average of 19 days each month. Meter readers walk up to 8 kilometers and read, on average, 350 meters per day, to obtain all the required readings.

Although Saint John Energy makes every effort to read all meters each month, there are a certain number of meters that are inaccessible for various reasons.

In some instances we ask our customers to provide a reading for us so that we may in turn provide an accurate invoice.

In the event that a customer is not at home when the meter reader comes to read an inside meter, a meter reading postcard is dropped off. (Note - the card you would receive would be blank and you would fill in the dials while looking at your meter). You may then call in your reading to our office to ensure you are billed for the proper consumption. If this card is not returned or the reading is not called in the consumption for the month is estimated using the best available data.
