March 12, 2009: Rate Increase for Saint John Energy Customers

Saint John Energy has a mandate to provide its customers with very reliable and cost effective service. In order to maintain this obligation it is necessary to ensure the financial stability of the company.

Chairman Chris Titus, said that as a wholesale customer of NB Power, the Commission will receive an increase of 3% and as such needs to recover this cost through increases to their own rates.

Saint John Energy will pass along NB Power’s 3% rate increase effective April 1, 2009.   This rate change will apply to all Saint John Energy customers including residential, commercial and industrial classes. The rate increase will not apply to the Commission’s “Peace of Mind” water heater rental program or the residential service charge.

These rate increases will result in an average monthly increase of $4.68 for electric heat residential customers and $0.54 per month for non-electric heat residential customers.

The rate change acknowledges the Energy and Utilities Board ruling which ordered the elimination of the residential declining rate block by April 2010. This goal will also be accomplished through the introduction of an interim flat rate for new construction also effective April 1, 2009. Closing of the rate blocks reverses the current pricing model which provides no disincentive for higher consumption.

Mr. Eric Marr, President and CEO of Saint John Energy, declared that “to help offset the effect of this increase, Saint John Energy will continue to promote energy conservation efforts” such as:
·        2006’s “Lighting the Way, Save Everyday” Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Campaign which resulted in 90,000 CFL’s being distributed to residential customers;
·        2007’s LED Christmas light exchange;
·        2008’s Energy Star Rebate and Fridge/Freezer roundup programs.

As a result of these campaigns, Saint John Energy’s customers have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars and have reduced green house gas emissions by over twelve hundred tonnes. Energy conservation tips are available at www.sjenergy.com.

Saint John Energy was formed as the Power Commission of the City of
Saint John in 1922 to construct and operate works to transmit and distribute power in the City. Today, Saint John Energy services more than 36,000 local customers through 13 substations, with energy sales of over 960,000,000 kilowatt hours annually.

Saint John Energy proud to unveil Public Art by artists Bruce Gray and Peter Powning on Tuesday January 27th, 2009. All Welcome.

Jan 14, 2009

On July 28th, 2008, as the first organization to implement the City of Saint John’s One Percent for Art Program, Saint John Energy announced, in conjunction with the construction of its new headquarters facilities at 325 Simms Street, Saint John West, the artists selected for this prestigious competition:  Bruce Gray, of Douglas, New Brunswick, and Peter Powning, of Markhamville, New Brunswick. The chosen pieces of public art will be unveiled, on site, to the citizens of Saint John and the general public at large on January 27th, 2009

Bruce Gray’s winning entry will be permanently installed inside the front entrance vestibule.  Gray’s work consist of a large wood mural and complementary furniture.  The three-panel mural, made from warm cedar shingles, will run from waist height to approximately 14 feet tall.  It depicts a graph of Saint John Energy's consumer base layered with an abstract depiction of the natural energy web. This will be overlaid with half a dozen stylized silhouettes of the business and services of Saint John Energy.  The complementary eight-foot long bench and table bring the piece down to a level that will welcome public interaction.  Made from single slabs of Fredericton elm, these two pieces feature striking elements and sweeping natural edges.

Peter Powning’s “Bolt,’ a stylized 20 foot high “bolt” of electricity made entirely of stainless steel, will be erected outside the building in a prominent location in front of Saint John Energy Headquarters, visible from the Throughway and many west side locations.
