You can sign up to learn more about the Smart Energy Project here and we will contact you by email or phone if a smart controller becomes available. Please note, signing up does not guarantee you will receive a smart controller for your water heater, as limited quantities are available.

The controller is installed on your water tank. Once set up, the controller will use a built-in cellular connection to communicate to systems at Saint John Energy. This will allow us to optimize your device's output temporarily. We will make this minor adjustment to optimize the efficiency of your water heater during peak times, when there is much stress on the power grid. These temporary optimizations will not affect your comfort at home, but will make a difference to our environmental impact.

The leak detection sensor is installed in the drain pan of your water heater. If moisture is detected, it will cause the controller to continuously beep until it is unplugged or the sensor is dry. It will also send Saint John Energy an email alert to follow up to fix the problem right away. Please note: Not all water heater models are compatible with the leak detector. When we install your smart controller, we will let you know if it has this feature.

The water heater controller has a sensor that can detect if your water heater is overheating or there are other problems (like a broken thermostat, faulty element, or mineral build-up). If this happens, your controller will temporarily shut off the water heater until the internal temperature reaches a safe level. It will also send Saint John Energy an email alert to follow up to fix the problem right away.

In the event of a power outage, neither your water heater nor the controller will work until power is restored.

The controller will beep when it detects a leak. If you hear this, check your water heater for visible leaks and call Saint John Energy at 506-658-5252. 

As part of our pilot project, we are testing many different options for our smart water heater controllers. As such, not all customers who receive a smart water heater controller are eligible for the accompanying mobile app at this time.
